DELEGATE LASHRECSE AIRD STATEMENT ON THE DESIGNATION OF JUNETEENTH AS A STATE HOLIDAY
PETERSBURG, VA – On Tuesday Governor Ralph Northam declared his plans to give State Employees the day off on Friday in recognition of Juneteenth and his request that the Commonwealth officially adopt Juneteenth as a State Holiday during the upcoming Legislative Session.
Delegate Aird released the following statement upon learning of these actions by Governor Northam:
“The rightful recognition of Juneteenth and all that it represents has been long overdue. With today’s announcement by Governor Ralph Northam to give state employees the day off from work to celebrate this momentous day, is a needed step in our Commonwealth, given our leading role in slavery. As we grapple with the issues of systemic racism, criminal justice reform and the pursuit of equity throughout the nation, this move affirms our appreciation of African American citizens of Virginia and their immeasurable sacrifices to this Commonwealth and this Country. I also look forward to supporting my colleagues that will carry the measure that will permanently designate June 19th as a State Holiday going forward.”
